ST. LOUIS, MO. (June 13, 2019) – This summer, 75 children from low-income, at-risk neighborhoods in the City of St. Louis can attend Midtown Community Services’ 30th annual Summer Academy Day Camp at little to no cost to their families. And thanks to the employees of Spire Inc. and a group of dedicated community volunteers, they’ll have a safe place to play all summer long.

Through the fundraising and volunteer efforts of Midtown’s advisory board, the organization’s 25-year-old playground underwent a complete renovation just in time for Camp’s opening day. Over the course of four days, 50 volunteers, including 36 Spire employees from the Spire Serves community service program, worked tirelessly to replace rotted posts, install new lumber flooring, and repair and paint the swing-set and other equipment.

“The playground project demonstrates the positive changes that can be made when the community comes together,” said Jerry Grimaud, president of Midtown’s advisory board. “We are thankful that so many people, including the team at Spire, donated their time to help us give Midtown’s campers the playground all kids deserve.”

Held since 1989, Midtown’s Summer Academy Day Camp gives kids ages five through 12 the opportunity to participate in sports, arts programming and weekly field trips. For many campers, this is their only chance to spend their days outside their homes due to poverty and crime in their neighborhoods and transportation constraints.
